Thorntons Strengthens Inverness Team with Two Senior Appointments

Full-service independent Scottish law firm Thorntons has appointed two new legal directors to its Inverness office, further strengthening its offering in the Highlands.

Gary Munro (Commercial Real Estate) and Susan Bird (Residential Property), bring with them extensive experience across the Scottish legal market and deep knowledge of all aspects of the local property landscape.

Gary joins Thorntons from Freeths, advising on a broad range of real estate matters including acquisitions, disposals and development projects across the UK. Dual-qualified in Scotland and England and Wales, he has significant experience managing complex property portfolios and supporting clients across various sectors, with particular expertise in the hospitality and leisure space.

Susan joins from Munro & Noble, where she was a partner specialising in residential conveyancing and crofting law. With more than 15 years’ experience, she has advised clients across all aspects of residential transactions, with additional expertise in the private client sector.

Their appointments mark the latest phase of growth for Thorntons in Inverness, where the firm established its first Highland office three years ago as part of its wider strategic expansion. Since then, the firm has continued to invest in building a full-service legal offering in the region, supporting individuals, families and businesses across a broad range of sectors.

Gary Munro said, “Thorntons has built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality legal advice combined with a genuinely client-focused approach. The firm’s continued investment in Inverness and the wider Highlands presents a compelling opportunity, and I’m looking forward to contributing to the growth of the commercial real estate team and supporting clients across the region and beyond. I’m also excited to contribute towards the firm’s continued growth in the leisure and hospitality sector.”

Susan Bird said, “Having worked in the Highlands for many years, I’ve seen first-hand the evolving needs of clients in the residential property market. Thorntons’ full-service model and commitment to the local community make it an exciting place to be, and I’m delighted to be joining the team at such a positive time in its development.”

Paul Adams, Partner at Thorntons, said, “Gary and Susan are both highly respected practitioners with strong track records and deep roots in the Highlands. Their combined experience further enhances both our commercial and residential property offerings in Inverness, enabling us to support a growing client base with a comprehensive and responsive service. Since opening our Inverness office, we have remained focused on building a team that reflects the needs of the local market while drawing on the strength of our wider firm. These appointments represent another important step in that journey as we continue to expand our presence and services across the region.”

Thorntons, which traces its roots back to 1857, is one of Scotland’s largest independent law firms, with almost 700 people across 14 offices. The firm offers a full range of legal services to businesses, individuals and families, combining local expertise with national reach.
