New Start Highland Leader Named as a Big Issue Top 100 Changemaker

New Start Highland’s Chief Executive, James Dunbar, has been honoured as a Big Issue Changemaker for Housing and Homelessness 2025. This prestigious list celebrates leaders across the UK who drive innovative solutions to address critical social challenges, with James being recognised for his transformative work in combatting homelessness and poverty across the Highlands.

James Dunbar commented, “Exiting homelessness is about so much more than just having a place to live. Having a warm and secure base transforms lives — it builds self-confidence, improves employment prospects and strengthens mental health. At New Start Highland, we are proud to go beyond housing to offer a holistic set of support services that help people achieve lasting physical and emotional change.

“To be named alongside leaders and organisations who inspire our work and are responsible for driving innovative change to help make our world a better place to live, is an honour.”

Under James’ leadership for the past 25 years, New Start Highland has carved a series of bespoke pathways for the local community to begin their journey towards breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness by providing a suite of services that help provide shelter but also address the barriers towards stability and success. His unwavering belief in human potential is what underpins the organisation whilst seeing so many people make meaningful change inspires him to continue to drive change and serve his community after two and a half decades.
