Inverness Chamber Meets Trade Envoy to France

Our International Trade Manager, Sarah Findlay was delighted to represent Inverness Chamber of Commerce in Lille this week at a roundtable lunch with Chris Murray, MP and Trade Envoy to France [pictured], hosted by UK Business Centre Lille.

The event brought together British companies operating in France, trade representatives and business support organisations to discuss the future of UK–France trade relations and the practical steps needed to support businesses navigating international markets.

Speaking after the event, Sarah said, “This was a valuable opportunity to engage directly with businesses operating in France and to hear first-hand both the opportunities and challenges they face. Strengthening relationships between the Highlands and Islands and key European regions like Hauts-de-France is vital, and it’s clear that with the right support and collaboration, there is strong potential for our businesses to grow and thrive internationally.”

A key theme throughout the discussions was the need for practical, solutions-focused support that enables businesses to trade smoothly and confidently between the UK and France. Attendees shared valuable insights on both the opportunities and ongoing challenges facing businesses trading across borders.

Among the key challenges raised were continued difficulties around access to labour and skills, particularly in sectors reliant on specialist expertise and international mobility (such as the Automotive industry). Businesses also discussed the impact of increasing regulatory complexity, administrative burdens and customs paperwork, which continue to create friction for companies trading between the UK and EU. Rising energy costs were also highlighted as a significant pressure affecting competitiveness and operational costs for businesses on both sides of the Channel.

Despite these challenges, the discussions were forward-looking and optimistic, with several opportunities identified for closer UK–EU cooperation. There was strong interest in the potential for greater regulatory alignment between the UK and EU to simplify trade processes and reduce barriers for businesses. It is clear that there are growing opportunities presented by AI and digital innovation, particularly in improving efficiency, streamlining administration and supporting cross-border trade operations.

These discussions reinforced the strategic value of the Hauts-de-France region as an important gateway into the European market for Scottish companies. Through strong partnerships and local knowledge, we can help play a vital role in helping businesses access new opportunities and overcome barriers to trade.

As part of the next steps, Inverness Chamber of Commerce will continue to strengthen our valuable relationships with UKBC Lille, Nord France Invest and other key partners to provide practical, solutions-based support for Scottish companies looking to expand into European markets through the Hauts-de-France region.

We look forward to building on the momentum from these discussions, with plans already underway for a follow-up visit to Lille later this year.

Inverness Chamber of Commerce remains committed to fostering strong international connections that create opportunities for businesses across the Highlands and Islands.
