TRADE OPPORTUNITIES IN SOUTH AFRICA

It is brilliant to see in-person events, trade shows and delegations returning post-Covid, enabling face to face networking. Despite this, the opportunities that can be achieved through virtual networking should not be dismissed.

There is no denying that the pandemic has forced us all into making the most out of using digital platforms to network with each other. This form of networking has not only allowed us to stay connected locally, but it has also provided the opportunity to make connections on a global scale like never before. As Scottish businesses continue to seize the opportunities that virtual networking can offer, the value of what the Scottish Chamber of Commerce network are doing on virtual trade missions is evident.

After having run a series of successful virtual trade missions throughout 2021 and 2022, Inverness Chamber of Commerce are delighted to announce our next virtual trade mission will take place in March 2023, focussing on the Cape Town and Johannesburg regions of South Africa.

Since its independence in April 1994, South Africa has grown significantly and has seen a large improvement in its economic conditions. With borders opening up to international businesses, South Africa has become the most developed economy in Africa.

In 2022, South Africa served as the UK’s 28th largest export market. With a population of 58 million, South Africa’s geographic location, widespread use of the English language and relatively transparent legal processes make it a logical and attractive option for Scottish companies, as well as a gateway for entering the Sub-Saharan Africa marketplace.

Top sectoral opportunities for Scottish companies in South Africa include:

  • Food & Drink
  • Tourism
  • Healthcare
  • Renewables
  • FinTech

The main aim of the mission is to give Scottish companies the opportunity to widen their business connections in Cape Town and Johannesburg, whilst simultaneously promoting Scotland’s investment opportunities across a variety of industries.

Scottish delegates will also have the chance to learn more about South Africa in terms of consumer trends, opportunities, legalities and tax implications. We cannot emphasise the value of virtual trade missions enough and would encourage the Highlands & Islands business community to get involved in the mission.
