Unlocking New Markets: Scottish Businesses Explore Opportunities in the Netherlands

Scottish businesses keen to expand into international markets joined Inverness Chamber of Commerce in March for a pre-mission workshop on exporting to the Netherlands. Delivered in partnership with Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce and supported by the Scottish Government and Scottish Chambers of Commerce, the session provided key insights into the Dutch market, business culture, and the opportunities available for Scottish companies.

With its inclusive, well-connected, and stable business environment, the Netherlands presents an attractive opportunity for Scottish companies looking to expand internationally. We were pleased to welcome 12 businesses from across Scotland to the session, where our guest speaker, Casper Muller, Trade Policy Lead at the Netherlands-British Chamber of Commerce, shared his expertise.

Casper provided valuable insights into the Netherlands’ current economic landscape, highlighting its top imports and exports, business culture, and the strong similarities between the Dutch and Scottish markets. He also explored how the Netherlands, with its strategic European location and EU membership, can serve as a gateway for Scottish businesses to expand further into international markets.

Inverness Chamber of Commerce’s International Trade Manager, Sarah Findlay, opened proceedings by outlining the main objectives of the upcoming Trade Mission to the Netherlands (20–22 May), what is involved, and who can take part.

Open to any business in Scotland with a turnover of less than £7 million, the mission will introduce innovative Scottish companies to the Dutch market, facilitate knowledge exchange, business networking, and valuable partnerships. A central component of the mission will be one-to-one meetings with Dutch businesses, organised by the Chamber team, to explore export opportunities.

Reflecting on the insights shared, Sarah Findlay commented: “This session proved to be incredibly valuable for those that attended, and we are delighted that seven businesses have signed up to take part in our in-person mission in May – three of those coming directly from the workshop event.”
