High Life Highland seeks new board members

High Life Highland is seeking to appoint non-executive directors to help provide strategic direction, expert advice and strong governance for the organisation. Vacancies have arisen on both the main charity board and the trading board.

Established by The Highland Council in 2011, High Life Highland works to make life better for residents and visitors by providing affordable access to opportunities in health and wellbeing, learning and culture across the Highlands.

The charity is seeking candidates with a wide range of skills and expertise but would particularly welcome applications from individuals with a proven track record in financial matters, and also those with experience in the attractions and leisure sectors. The Trading Board welcomes applications from those with experience in commercial ventures or those with experience in the food and drink sector.

The High Life Highland charity board comprises four elected members from The Highland Council and eight independent directors. The trading board consists of nine directors, all of whom bring a wealth of experience and skills to these voluntary roles.

The newly appointed chair of the main High Life Highland board, Michael Boylan, said, “Being involved with a charity such as High Life Highland is immensely rewarding, as we strive to make life better for the people of the Highlands. Seeing the positive impact our committed teams have across the region, is hugely gratifying.

The opportunity to contribute to an organisation that plays such an important role in the lives of residents and visitors alike doesn’t come along often. We look forward to welcoming new members who can bring fresh ideas, along with strong entrepreneurial, commercial and financial experience to the organisation.

Sharing her experience, Valerie Graham, a director on the High Life Highland Trading Board said: “Following a career in hospitality, executive leadership, operational transformation, and governance, serving as a director on the High Life Highland Trading Board has been an incredibly rewarding opportunity to give something back. It allows me to use my experience to support an organisation that has a real impact on communities across the Highlands. Working alongside passionate and talented Board colleagues is both inspiring and fulfilling, and I would encourage anyone who wants to make a meaningful difference to consider joining the Board.”

Andrew Button also sits on the High Life Highland Trading Board, he commented, “After a long career in banking, retirement came as a bit of a shock after a lifetime of structure and organisation. Settling in Golspie, we were fortunate to have a leisure centre and the opportunity to use the facilities helped in this transition. So High Life Highland really does live up to its primary purpose to ‘make life better’ for people.

I therefore took the opportunity to join High Life Highland as a director because I could see the difference it makes supporting communities across the Highlands promoting wellbeing, learning and culture for all its residents. To serve as a director has allowed me to give something back to my community and support the charity to continue deliver these valuable services, hopefully for generations to come.”

High Life Highland is committed to creating and maintaining balanced and diverse boards. While all applications will be considered on merit and fit with the role, the charity particularly welcomes applications from women, younger people, and individuals from ethnically diverse communities, ensuring the boards better reflect the communities they serve.

High Life Highland delivers a wide range of services for people of all ages across the region, including leisure facilities, libraries, archives, community centres, sport, outdoor activities, music tuition and visitor attractions.
