Go Flourish Garden Welcomes Volunteers from Balfour Beatty

Go Flourish were delighted to welcome a team of volunteers from Balfour Beatty projects across the North of Scotland to their pilot school garden at North Kessock Primary School recently.

The volunteer team contributed to a wide range of tasks in the garden, including building an apple tree espalier, power washing the greenhouse, constructing no-dig vegetable beds, and weeding. Their help was invaluable in supporting the physical work, while additional support from GA Barnie, Gap Group Ltd and Macgregor Industrial Supplies, who provided materials and resources, was also greatly appreciated.

The Go Flourish Garden is used to deliver nature-based curriculum learning by primary teacher Laura Dorantt, employed by the project. Go Flourish is also working with the University of St. Andrews to monitor the project’s impact on the school, particularly regarding children’s wellbeing, with a view to wider rollout.

The gardens serve not only the school but also the wider community, offering a variety of volunteering opportunities.

Sophie Swift, Environmental and Sustainability Graduate at Balfour Beatty, said, “Our work will help enrich hands-on outdoor learning, enable pupils to develop creativity, teamwork, and resilience, all while fostering a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and sustainability. A wonderful initiative for planting the seeds — quite literally — for healthier, happier, and more environmentally aware young people.”
