FROM CHIEF TO CDS

As UK traders continue to adjust to the ever-growing changes of trading globally, HMRC are introducing a new system for processing customs entries and now it is the time for traders to prepare.

With over 30 years of service, CHIEF (Customs Handling of Import and Export) has served the UK tremendously, however it is an old technology that is being retired and replaced by the Customs Declaration Services (CDS).  The closure of the current CHIEF system will be adopted into 2 phases:


– On 30th September 2022, CHIEF will no longer be usable for import declarations
– On 31st March 2023, export declarations will close on the CHIEF and the National Exports System (NES)

The new CDS system will provide a more secure and stable platform that has the capacity and capability to grow in line with the Government’s ambitious trade plans.

It is therefore imperative that traders consider the following 5 key stages when migrating over to the new system:
