ICC are delighted that the iconic Cairngorm Mountain Railway is now open again after a four-year wait. Owned by our Executive partner HIE and operated by the Cairngorm Mountain Team, it is Scotland’s only funicular railway and is the highest in the UK, reaching the newly refurbished Ptarmigan building and restaurant, at over 1,065m.
Another Executive partner, engineering firm Balfour Beatty, has been instrumental in the reopening. Dozens of workers tackled the elements, including 106mph winds and swarms of midges, and 800 tonnes of concrete were lifted by thousands of helicopter trips. Particular care was taken not to damage the natural mountain environment during the intensive works.
We are very proud of the work of both our partners on this engineering feat, and we hope the railway encourages more visitors to enjoy the beautiful Cairngorms.
